The Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority is commemorating Black History Month with two special events that will entertain passengers while involving students in the celebration of black history. Local middle and high students will compete in a Poetry Slam that will be judged by Nikki Giovanni, a New York Times Bestsellers List author.

At another event, Kwame Alexander, an author who was recently nominated for a 2012 NAACP Image Award, will read his children’s book to elementary school students. The book whimsically highlights the contributions of musical icons to African-American culture.

Dulles International Airport 
Monday, February 13
9:30 a.m.-10:15 a.m.; 10:45 a.m.-11:30 a.m. 
“Acoustic Rooster and his Barnyard Barn” will be read and performed by Kwame Alexander to local elementary school students from Loudoun and Fairfax County Public Schools.

Note: The Dulles events will be held behind Harry’s Tap Room located in the Main Terminal. 

Reagan National Airport 
Monday, February 27
10:00 a.m.-noon 
Students from local middle and high schools in the D.C., Maryland and Virginia will compete in a Poetry Slam. 
Judges include: Nikki Giovanni, esteemed poet and New York Times Bestsellers List author 
Amy Young, poet laureate from Alexandria, Va.
Vincent Young, published author and artist from the Airports Authority
Following the Poetry Slam, Nikki Giovanni will read selections from her works and answer questions from the audience.

Note: This event will be held in the Historic Lobby of Terminal A.
