Industry veteran brings more than three decades of aviation experience
The Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority Board of Directors voted on Wednesday to approve Yil Surehan as vice president of airline business development. He brings more than three decades of aviation experience and industry leadership to the role.
“Surehan’s background expanding air service at one of the fastest growing airports in the nation, combined with his success at several domestic airlines, makes him an ideal fit to lead our growing Airline Business Development team,” said Jerome L. Davis, executive vice president and chief revenue officer of the Airports Authority. “As we transform our air service program, we welcome Surehan’s leadership and insights as we work to diversify air service while ensuring the continued success of our domestic and international partners at Dulles International and Reagan National. I’d like to thank Carl Schultz, who has served as the interim vice president since December 2017, and will return to his previous role of director of airline business development.”
Since 2005, Surehan has led airline route development efforts for the Massachusetts Port Authority (Massport), where, under his leadership, Boston Logan International Airport doubled its international destinations and broke passenger traffic records seven years in a row. He started his career in the airline industry, working in various planning, scheduling and market development roles for United Airlines, Alaska Airlines and American Airlines. He holds a bachelor’s degree in finance and international business from New York University and a master’s degree in business administration, with a concentration in economics, from the University of Texas.
“The Airports Authority’s Business Development team plays a key role in continuing to expand, enhance and solidify Dulles International’s position as the National Capital Region’s gateway to the world,” said Surehan. “I look forward to working with this innovative, forward-thinking team to secure new air service offerings for the more than 46 million passengers that fly through Reagan National and Dulles International airports annually.”
