Washington’s Airports were taking steps Friday to prepare for weather impacts related to Hurricane Sandy. Dulles International and Ronald Reagan Washington National are working with airlines at each airport to make sure items on the airfield are secure, testing backup generators and clearing storm drains in advance of the storm.

“As part of regular preparation for any regional weather event, we work with our airlines and tenants to ensure the traveling public are safe at our airport,” said Chris Browne, Airport Manager, Dulles International Airport. “We are meeting frequently with our airport partners to discuss plans as more details become available about the possible storm track.”

The Airports are closely monitoring the forecast and will keep tenants informed of any updates. Passengers should check with their airline about any flight delays or adjustments to rebooking policies.

“In addition to readying our airfield for severe weather, we are working with our concessions to make sure they have adequate staffing and supplies for our customers in case there are significant flight delays or schedule changes,” said Paul Malandrino, Airport Manager, Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport. “We are coordinating closely with airlines about the approaching storm.”

The Airports Authority will update the official Twitter account @dcairports about storm preparation and will retweet airlines as they make Hurricane Sandy related changes.

Reagan Washington National serves more than 850 flights each day. Dulles International serves nearly 1,000 flights daily.
