The Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority has opened several “pet relief areas” at Ronald Reagan Washington National and Washington Dulles International Airports. These areas give travelers a new option when their pet or service animal needs a bathroom break while at the airport. The typical layout of each pet relief area at Dulles includes a mockup of a fire hydrant placed on artificial “K-9 grass” in a fenced-in area. The grass was developed to be paw-friendly to our four-legged friends and easy to maintain. While the majority of the five Dulles locations are outside the Main Terminal, two are inside the midfield concourses for the convenience of ticketed connecting passengers. The indoor locations also feature unique ventilation and flushing/drainage systems to maintain clean facilities. At Reagan National all four pet relief areas are outdoors on natural grass, near the pre-security side of Terminals A, B and C. All locations at both airports are signed and include supplies for disposal of pet waste. A full list of locations is available on our website at www.mwaa.com/reagan and www.mwaa.com/dulles under the “airport services” tab. These enhancements at Reagan and Dulles comply with recent Federal requirements for airports to provide “service animal relief areas” for service animals that accompany passengers. Because of the needs of our other furry customers, passengers traveling with family pets are also welcome to use these areas.
