Innovative Interior and Apparel Design Architectural Models on Display First at Reagan National then at Dulles International Airport
The artistic vision of Anne Arundel Community College students is brought to life through ‘The Art of Living,’ a new exhibit on display now at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport, and moving to Washington Dulles International Airport later this fall. AACC students enrolled in space planning courses were challenged with creating interior designs inspired by contemporary clothing as part of a competition encouraging the combination of interior and fashion design last spring.

Travelers viewing the exhibit will experience 27 vignettes, including each student’s interior design story boards, a photo of their inspiration, their design statement and a piece of furniture or architectural model exemplifying their overall design vision. This artistic portfolio creates a three-dimensional representation of their story boards by bringing aspects of their design to life.
“The Art of Living celebrates the gift of design, and the perspective an artist brings to enriching our lives,” said Dimitra Tangires, Anne Arundel Community College American Society of Interior Designers faculty advisor. “From the clothes that we wear, the space that we live and work in, along with the buildings that shelter us, designers add to the fabric of everyday life. It’s through the eye of a designer that we celebrate life and connect to the world in our own unique way. Even the simplest things become inspirational and challenge us to see the many possibilities that exist around us, every day of our lives.”
Award winning designs – including a chandelier, dress and fabric sculpture – reinforce the merging of interior and fashion design throughout the exhibit. Created by AACC students and evaluated by faculty, these pieces continue the artful education experience in the modern academic curricula.

The exhibit, part of the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority Arts Program, will be on display first in the Terminal B/C baggage claim area at Reagan National until November 3 and then will transition to Concourse B at Dulles International until December 8.
The Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority, through its Arts Program, offers diverse regional, national and international rotating exhibits, live performances and public art displays that celebrate the beauty and creativity of the National Capital Region. The Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority, established in 1987 by the governments of Virginia and the District of Columbia, manages and operates Ronald Reagan Washington National and Washington Dulles International airports, which together serve more than 40 million passengers a year. The Airports Authority also operates and maintains the Dulles Airport Access Road and the Dulles Toll Road and manages construction of the Silver Line project, a 23-mile extension of the Washington region’s Metrorail system into Loudoun County, Virginia. No tax dollars are used to operate the toll road, which is funded by toll revenues, or the airports, which are funded through aircraft landing fees, rents and revenues from concessions. The Silver Line construction is funded by a combination of toll-road revenues, airport contributions and federal, state and local government appropriations. The Airports Authority is led by a 17-member board of directors, appointed by the governors of Virginia, Maryland, the mayor of Washington, D.C., and the president of the United States, and generates more than 387,000 jobs and 4.5 percent of GDP in the National Capital Region.
