As part of the ongoing project to improve the main runway at Reagan National Airport, construction crews will make modifications to the runway’s approach light system. Many of the lights are located on a pier in the Potomac River, immediately south of the main runway (also known as Runway 1-19). The initial pier work will require overnight pile driving to avoid interfering with the daily schedule of flights. The lights will be replaced with upgraded, new equipment. The overnight pier work will coincide with runway milling and paving on the airfield.
Construction barges with cranes will be used for pile driving, which will take place nightly between 11pm and 6am--weather permitting. The cranes will be lowered during other times when flights are in operation. The pile driving is scheduled to begin Monday night, August 1, and is expected to take approximately 90 days. Over 200 of the existing piles will be replaced and the pier will be rehabilitated.
In addition to impact pile driving, quieter vibratory pile driving will be used where feasible—but some noise may be audible from communities along the Potomac River shoreline. Questions or concerns about noise impacts can be directed to 703-417-8020, 24 hours/7days.
