New Dulles airline begins low-cost daily non-stop service to Reykjavik, Iceland
Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority staff and special guests gathered Wednesday at Dulles International Airport to celebrate the launch of Play Airlines nonstop service from Washington to Reykjavik, Iceland. Service on the new low-cost carrier was announced August 23, 2022.
The inaugural flight from Keflavik (KEF) Airport landed at Dulles International (IAD) around 5:15 p.m. on April 26 and received a fire department water-arch salute along its taxi route to Concourse A.
Fans of the airport were encouraged to sign up through Dulles social media accounts for an opportunity to view Wednesday’s aircraft arrival up-close. The group of more than 40 guests was treated to a special mobile lounge trip to the airfield to photograph the Airbus A320 neo touching down on Runway 19L.
A ceremonial ribbon-cutting event took place at Gate A24. A selection of catered food provided a taste of Iceland before the flight boarded. All Passengers on the departing flight received a Puffin souvenir.
Speaking on behalf of the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority, Vice President for Airline Business Development Paul Bobson said, "Play Airlines kicks off a record breaking year along with several other new airlines that will add over 500 thousand additional seats to Washington Dulles service in 2023."
